Extreme sportsmen jump into China
First-ever Chinese BASE event to be broadcast live to 1.2 billion
September 29, 2003 - L.A. Demos, the world's only professional low-altitude parachute demonstration company, announces the award of a contract from the Shanghai Sports Federation and the Jin Mao Group of China to organize the mainland's first BASE exhibition. Fifteen jumpers from around the world will be the highlight of a live air show when they hurl themselves from China's tallest building; the Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai. This spectacle will be broadcast LIVE via Chinese television to at least 1.2 billion people on October 5, 2003.
BASE is the sport of fixed-object parachute jumping, wherein extreme sportsmen launch themselves from Buildings, Aerials (towers), Spans (bridges) and the Earth (cliffs). Low-altitude stunts have been featured in movies such as the recent Tomb Raider II, A View to a Kill, and Cliffhanger.
"Some people get nervous when you talk about jumping off things," says Harry Parker, L.A. Demos Event Director. "For me, though, BASE jumping is not about death, but about awakening to the present moment and celebrating life. There is a real feeling of excitement and freedom in relying on yourself, stepping off the edge and just facing your fears."
The Chinese approached L.A. Demos because of positive press from a similar event held in 2001 and 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which Parker and his team helped to produce.
He and his team are among the elite in the sport of BASE, with many years of experience and nearly 10,000 jumps between them.
"It's exciting to break into the Chinese market. The Jin Mao Tower event is of an unprecedented scale and will introduce our sport to a lot of people," said Parker.
"We hope to improve the city's image and promote air sports via the show," said Shen Jiachun, head of the Shanghai Airsports School. (Taken from China Daily News 8-21-03)
Following the event in Shanghai, L.A. Demos will travel to the former Portugese colony of Macau on China's southern coast to jump the Macau Tower. This second round of action will take place on October 9 and 10.
A professional videographer, several still cameramen and a writer will travel with the team to Asia, to capture these events in images and words.
